Diamond Symmetry Information
Symmetry is a term which describes the precise shape and array of the
facets of a diamond. It is also the grade given to the cut of the
diamond; this can range from poor to excellent. The symmetry of a
diamond actually plays an important role in the evaluation of the cut of
a diamond. Symmetry is a vital part of the finish of a diamond. Some
adverse characteristics of diamond facets could include out of shape
facets with the culets and tables being slightly out of place, extra
facets or having the crown or pavilion facets out of alignment. If a
person is not very familiar with characteristics of a quality diamond,
the facet features may not have an adverse effect on the appearance of
the diamond. The symmetry of the diamond is actually not as important as
the clarity of a diamond. However, if you are looking at a diamond with
a high clarity grade, the symmetry would actually be very important.
The certified diamond grading report will list the symmetry of the
diamond. There are not too many diamonds that have a symmetry grade of
excellent or very good, but it would be best if you could select a
diamond of that grade because poor symmetry will hinder the sparkle of a
diamond since the light does not flow through the stone in a manner that
will capture one's attention. Quality diamonds that have a symmetry
grade of Good are the most frequently purchased diamonds. You would most
likely be satisfied with a diamond of this symmetry as these types
of diamonds are very beautiful.
To the trained eye, or even untrained eye, when looking at the depth and
table percentage, as well as the height of the crown and pavilion, it
will be more impressive than the actual diamond symmetry. That's now to
say that you should purchase a diamond with a rating of fair to very
poor symmetry. Most labs grade the diamond symmetry as excellent, very
good, good, fair, poor, very poor and extremely poor.
The foundation for lab grades are done by microscopic examinations to
make certain that the facets meet perfectly.
The descriptions of the various ratings are as follows:
Excellent (E or EX) means that the symmetry is what it implies)
excellent, even flawless when looked at with magnification at 10X.
Very good grade (VG or VGD) is exceptionally hard to establish with less
than 10 power.
Good (GD, GO, G) is very hard to located with less than 10 power.
Fair (F, FR, FA) is perceptible under 10 power.
Poor (PR, PO, P) is quite easily determined under 10 times power; it is
also noticeable with the naked eye.
Very Poor (VP, VE) is quite easy to notice with the untrained, naked
eye.
Extremely Poor (EX or EP) is quite obvious to notice with the naked and
even untrained eye.
To the untrained eye, there may not be any noticeable differences
between diamonds with excellent, very good or even some good symmetry
diamonds.
