Shape of Diamonds

A Diamond's Shape

The shape of the diamond is merely what it implies "the fundamental shape." When viewed from the top, the most widespread diamonds are the round, marquise, oval, pear, heart, emerald, princess and radiant. The most common shapes of diamonds purchased today are the brilliant cuts or hybrid cuts, that is, with the exception of the emerald cut. In terms of the cost of a diamond, the round brilliant is at the top of the list. The square cuts generally cost about 10% less for a diamond of comparable weight and quality.

If you are considering a diamond purchase as an investment, you should choose a round brilliant. On the other hand, if you are considering a diamond for daily wear, such as for an engagement ring, choose a shape which most appeals to you.

A well-known diamond appraiser in New York by the name of Saul Spero, spent over 25 years interviewing over 50,000 people to find out if there was an association between a woman's personality and preferred diamond shapes. He wrote a book on the subject in which he states that if a woman strongly prefers a certain shape, she can be characterized as having certain traits.
