The Polish of a Diamond
Polish is defined as a grade given to the external finish of a
diamond. You
must have good polish for optimum brilliance of a diamond. Both polish
and
symmetry are important aspects of the cutting process.
The polish of a diamond will depict how well the diamond was finished,
as
well as how clean, shiny and straight the edges of the facets were cut.
It
will also show if there are any traces of miniature or microscopic lines
or
flaws left by the polisher and if any marks are visible on the diamond.
The skill of the diamond cutter is evident in the cutting and polishing
process of the diamond. The polishing effects the manner in which the
light
can pass through the diamond. Once the light passes through the diamond,
the
brilliance of the diamond is much greater and it will shine brightly.
The
polish of a diamond is essential to its brilliance, thus you should
choose a
diamond with good to excellent polish. Be aware of diamonds with poor
polish. A diamond must be polished expertly by the diamond cutter. If a
diamond is not polished, labor costs will be greater merely by the
cutter
not taking the time to correctly polish a diamond. Only a trained eye
will
be able to distinguish between polish grades.
A reputable and experience diamond cutter will know how to cut a diamond
in
order to obtain the maximize brilliance of the diamond. The diamond must
reflect the light so that it is reflected and returned back to your eye
through the stone. A diamond will even be more brilliant if the stone
has
high quality color and clarity, although, if such a stone is poorly cut,
it
doesn't matter the quality of the diamond, as the diamond will have no
life
to it. Thus, it is very important that your diamond be cut by an expert
craftsman diamond cutter.
Microscopic polish lines develop when the diamonds are not polished
properly. They are obviously less brilliant and not beautiful like a
properly polished diamond. The polish lines actually obscure the surface
of
the diamond and decrease the amount of light that comes in and goes in
through
the diamond. Surface grain lines occur as a result of a polish defect.
These
grain lines can sometimes be seen with the naked eye when the light is
reflected.
The flash of light that is noticed when a woman flashes her new
engagement
ring in a result of light entering the stone from several different
angles.
The process of cutting and polishing greatly contributes to the sparkle
and
brilliance of a diamond.
