Diamond Purchasing

Purchasing Diamonds

When you are in the market for a diamond, you must realize that you are going to be purchasing a luxury item. Diamonds are obviously beautiful and shiny and stunning, but there are other characteristics of diamond that you should learn before buying one. In most cases, people buy their first diamond for an engagement ring. Diamonds are pretty much the standard selection for engagement rings in the United States. However, in many countries, millions of couples become engaged with merely a plain band. In the United States there are many couples who select gems, other than diamonds, and still others who choose a plain band. Before purchasing a diamond, make sure that a diamond is what you genuinely prefer in your engagement ring.

Many people believe that diamonds are costly because they are rare. This is not the case at all. Diamonds are expensive because there are strict controls put on the amount of diamonds that can be sold throughout the world. As a matter of fact, there are realistically enough diamonds in the world to fill a cupful for each man, woman and child on the planet.

Most women probably prefer diamonds because they are the traditional symbol of commitment and love and should last a lifetime with proper care. When a couple decides to purchase a diamond, they should put careful research and thought into their selection. Give yourselves adequate time to research and decide on all the options that are available before purchasing a ring. Generally, only the purchase of a home and a car are more expensive than the purchase of a diamond engagement ring. Therefore, you should seriously consider all of the choices within your budget.

There are four "Cs" when it comes to diamond quality. These are carat, clarity, color and cut.

It is easier to determine the quality of a diamond with regards to carat weight, clarity and color, than it is the cut of the diamond. The novice may not be able to distinguish between a "great" cut, a "good" cut, and a "bad" cut, but the cut will make a big difference when it comes to the beauty and value of the diamond. A deceitful jeweler may try to sell you a big carat stone that is of excellent clarity and color for a relatively low price, but still make a hefty profit because the cut may be of inferior quality and cost of that particular diamond may have been relatively inexpensive for the jeweler.
